About Ian Gill AWCB

Ian Gill AWCB is an award winning metal sculptor who has been designing and creating contemporary works of art for almost two decades. He studied at Hereford Collage of Art & Design for 3 years perfecting his knowledge and understanding of blacksmithing, also incorporating wood and stone.

His full understanding of hot metal has enabled him to use a combination of traditional blacksmithing and modern industrial techniques, working with heavy gauge materials that can be hot forged.

His inspiration comes from natural organic forms combined with an industrial twist representing nature in its natural form, creating the captivating work he produces today ‘Conceptual Reality In Steel’.

Ian Gill’s work can be viewed at various exhibitions around the UK throughout the year. His public commissions include 4 permanent installations in Bushy Park Water Gardens Hampton Court and he most recently created and installed an exclusive large set of bamboo/leaf gates on the Kings Road London. Ian was also commissioned to design and produce a selection of sculptures for Coworth Park Hotel (Dorchester Collection).

He has exhibited widely and his work is held extensively in collections throughout the UK and Europe, as well as being sold through Sothebys.

Ian’s work has recently been selected to represent Sculptors from the UK as part of the 2016 metal symposium held the Czech Republic. Ian will be producing his chosen design to be permanently installed in the city centre of Mlada’ Boleslav.

All of the shaping is just about finished now start polishing on Monday. Watch this space for the installation
We start the next piece in September.

Another productive day at Hampton Court, most definitely see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Going really well the last 2 days.
What a busy few weeks since Chelsea!
Busy is an understatement in fact.
We have around 5 large projects running at once, you will show you photos an more info as these exciting projects unfold over the next few weeks.
Hampton court build has begun.
I will try and keep you up to date with images this time ! I’m rubbish at this social media stuff.

Here it is so far. With the help of my great team. Shell, Gav, Ben,
This is the remains of our stand at 4.30 today.
Another Chelsea done and dusted!!
Well not much dust!!
I should have said slushsted!!
I’ve not seen that amount of rain fall in a long time!
Never mind, here are the highlights.
We was sent this pic of Joy,looking stunning in its new home. We really love seeing our work in situ. If anybody has a photos of any of our sculpture in you garden please Send it to us and we could share them on here. Don’t worry we won’t share any locations.
Been busy with this chap recently.
He left the Forge to make his journey to North Wales to his new home.
Mumbai Project.
last Monday I flew out to Mumbai,
to start the installation of some sculpture which we was commissioned to make by a corporate Client based in Mumbai India. We sailed the sculpture out around 3 months earlier. The order was taken at the 2017 RHS Chelsea flower show.
This was quite a complex build as this involved architects, water and electricity! Put all of those in the mix what could possibly go wrong !?
Well I’m really pleased to say due to Both planning and a phenomenal team!
Taking all this into account the installation ran as smooth as silk.
I had a team of around 18 and only 3 of them could speak any English! But with plenty of animation it was just fine.
Hot Stuff!!
To give some idea of the temperatures that we work with! we have been forging these 3 pieces of steel and welded them together to make a new press tool. Once all the forging procedure has been done, we then quench the red hot metal in water, not only does it cool metal down but it changes the molecular content of the material changing the grain boundaries. This will then make the metal harder wearing, which is more suitable for the application of which it is intended.
I hope I haven’t bored you all too much! I thought that some of you may be interested 🤪
Each leaf requires this heating process several times, for the shaping and annealing to achieve the finished result.
Well Happy new year everyone, and may be the most fantastic and profitable one for all of us.
One of my New Year’s resolutions is to be more proactive with all of my social media so here goes.
Just a few photos for now, but at least it’s a start !
Here is a small slide show of the making of #what,s next?
What a Day, all done and dusted, the installation everybody loved the new complex and the sculpture was well received.

#what's next?
Today is the unveiling of my latest piece,
It is a public art installation going outside sports complex up in Durham. Steve Cram will be opening sports hall and unveiling the sculpture. I have been asked to say a few words as well. To be continued
Giant dragonfly on a bulrush, another very happy customer, this piece is over 4.5 m tall weighs around 250 KG is now living in its new home. I'm now looking forward to getting some more photos of this piece on a sunny day.
Celebration, this piece was made back in 2012 as a celebration for the Olympics. This piece stands just under 4 m tall.
Just received these photos from a lovely lady called Marian, she purchased one of our bird bath feeders at Hampton Court this year and she wanted to share its location in its new home. I'm sure you're agree it looks just amazing in Marian's beautiful garden.
We have only gone and done it again!! We are now at Hampton Court flower show. Today we was awarded another 5 star gold medal certificate from the RHS, apparently only five were issued at the entire show. So feeling rather proud of all our efforts.
More Than 300 stand build hrs later
We are up and running.
The judges loved it and awarded us the big one.
5 shinny gold stars.
The Chelsea Flower show build up is now well and truly on its way, we have been battered by the weather! But we have not let it beat us.
This is day 5 of 5am starts and 10 pm finishes but we can now see a light at the end of the tunnel.
